What has changed, and when

Two kinds of change matter to anyone using this calculator: a change in the law, and a change in what this site is able to tell you about it. Both are recorded here with dates, because a site that quietly edits itself is asking you to trust a version you cannot see.

Changes to this site

What this calculator is able to tell you, and when that changed. Every row is a change to the figures or to the rules the calculator applies — not a redesign, not a new page for its own sake.

DateWhat changedWhy it matters to you
11 August 2026Part-time contracts are now calculated. The official guidance sets the entitlement as the full-time figure scaled by contracted hours ÷ full-time hours, from the Implementing Regulation to the labour law. Until today this calculator refused to answer for reduced-hours contracts, because we had not found that rule.If you are on a part-time contract, there is now a figure for you — with the hours division shown.
11 August 2026The calculator now asks about the Savings Scheme. An employer may enrol staff in the alternative end-of-service system, and from enrolment the traditional gratuity stops accruing. If you are enrolled, a gratuity figure is the wrong answer and this calculator now stops instead of producing one.
11 August 2026Temporary work has its own rule. Temporary employment shorter than one year earns no gratuity — a separate provision from the general qualifying period, and now cited as itself. The calculator names the rule that actually produced your result, so you can go and read that sentence rather than a different one.
11 August 2026Government employees added to the out-of-scope list. The private-sector employment law does not apply to federal or local government employees. We previously believed this but had not found it stated on an official source, so we did not say it.The scope list is now complete as far as the official guidance goes.
11 August 2026Settlement timing and deductions are stated. All outstanding wages, other entitlements and gratuity are payable within 14 days of the end of the contract, and an employer may deduct amounts you owe them. You can tell whether your settlement is late, which is different from wondering whether it is slow.
August 2026This site launched, with the gratuity calculation, the statute in plain English, and the working shown on every result.

Changes to the law

The change that still governs most of what people get wrong is the oldest one here.

Changes in the UAE private-sector end-of-service rules that this site models.
DateThe changeEffect on the gratuity
2 February 2022Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 took effect, replacing Federal Law No. 8 of 1980. It abolished the unlimited contract and introduced work models — full-time, part-time, temporary and flexible. The reduction for resigning is gone, and the contract-type question no longer exists.
2023Cabinet Resolution No. 96 of 2023 introduced the voluntary alternative end-of-service benefits system — the Savings Scheme — with subscription terms set by ministerial resolution. An enrolled employee’s entitlement becomes a fund balance instead of a calculation.
2022, 2023, 2024Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 has been amended three times (14/2022, 20/2023 and 9/2024).We have found no change to the end-of-service provision across the three — but that is from the amendment summaries, not from comparing the enacted texts. It is recorded here as an open item rather than as a clean bill of health.

How to read this page

A dated row means somebody changed a figure or a rule and left a record of it. What it does not mean is that everything not listed has been re-checked — the honest state of the site is described on the method page, including the questions it still cannot answer and the one figure on it that is weaker than the rest.

If you know of a change that is not here, tell us and point at the source. A correction with a source attached is worth more than any amount of monitoring.
